Independent Thinking

Philosopher Griet Vandermassen is widely known as a clear-headed and independent voice in public debate. In this Tijdsbeeld, photographer Tim Deschaumes gives visual form to that spirit of independent thinking. Through a fleeting balance of planes, lines, colours and textures, he reveals its complexity: the relentless search for a fragile equilibrium between openness and judgement, and the solitary position of the autonomous thinker.

Deschaumes creates semi-abstract photographs using only objects found in everyday surroundings. In this work, a vivid red beam immediately draws the eye. It appears almost out of place, standing alone and commanding attention. It conveys strength and courage, yet also vulnerability. Its edges are worn, its position unsettled. Vandermassen’s heterodox approach to thinking, free from ideological dogma and open to competing convictions, demands precisely that kind of courage.

In contrast stands the house, its shutters firmly closed. It has literally shut itself off from the world. By refusing dialogue with its surroundings, it becomes blind to its own imperfections. Cracks begin to appear in the façade. Meanwhile, an extraordinary golden light falls across the roof. Is it the first light of dawn, or the glow of evening? The photograph evokes the tension between the demanding path of independent thought and the comfort of intellectual closure, while suggesting how the independent thinker continually navigates between optimism and discouragement.
